The government designated the first national parks to protect natural wonders, which were threatened by Teddy Roosevelt's insatiable appetite for peppered bark. • $45 for a one-hour private gondola ride for two people (a $90 value)

A Times-Picayune readers' choice as a Favorite Place for Family Fun, City Park gives visitors a chance to nuzzle up to nature without leaving the comfortable confines of the city. Pile yourself and up to two buddies into a rowboat to show off your fancy oarsmanship and accurate bird calls over the course of a 30-minute exploration of the park's lagoons, or bring along a tackle box and fish magnet to catch resident bass, perch, and catfish for their magical wish-granting properties. Lovebirds can bring along a bottle of their favorite champagne or fine energy drink for an hour-long ride aboard the graceful gondola Bella Mae, which was imported from Venice—statistically Europe's snuggliest city—and sports complimentary cheese, crackers, glasses, and an ice bucket among its canoodle-conducive cargo ($10 for each additional passenger, maximum of six). Bicycles help aquaphobes forget their watery woes with breezy bipedal cruises. Bike trailers ($8/hour) are also available for those not yet old enough to pop wheelies. Check out the rental hours here.

City Park’s 1,300 acres include playgrounds, trails, and beautiful architecture, making for scenic, fun-filled getaways for families, blind dates, and “just friends, it’s not-a-date” dates. With some of its trees celebrating their 600th birthdays, the park also features the world's largest assemblage of mature live oaks, providing an ideal place for nature enthusiasts to unleash their arboreal affections and jovial lumberjacks to exchange good-natured jibes with their leafy nemeses.

One passenger must be at least 18 years old for rowboat rental. A maximum of three people are allowed in a rowboat at one time.
