The Deal

  • $260 for a one-week horsemanship adventure camp ($500 value)
  • Monday, June 23, to Friday, June 27: 9:30 a.m.–5 p.m.

Each child will be assigned their own horse or pony, with instructors covering rider safety and basic grooming and helping pupils to mount, dismount, and control the animal while in the saddle. Each day comprises two mounted lessons, two theory lessons, and one practice ride. The school loans helmets for free, but riders must wear their own hard-soled shoes with a heel; the stables recommend riders wear riding pants or jeans and chaps or half-chaps for comfort. A drink and afternoon snack are provided, but students should bring their own lunch.

Clay Hill Stables

Since founding Clay Hill Stables in 1964, British Horse Society–certified instructor Emmie Prettyman has passed her vast equine expertise on to legions of horses and their riders through a variety of services. Emmie captains a team of instructors certified to teach the English style of riding as well as administer first aid and CPR, ensuring safe and sound lessons for students as young as 6. Beginner classes work to establish fundamentals both on and off the saddle, including riding positions and basic grooming and tacking. Once riders have demonstrated proficiency at the paces of walk, trot, and canter, they may be eligible for the jumping work in the intermediate/advanced class, where they build on skills with more intricate flatwork and jumping exercises, as well as have the opportunity for trail rides and horse shows.
