Before man conquered his fear of water, he amused himself with dust sports such as pushing boulders off cliffs, wrestling tumbleweeds, and falling in the dust. Rinse yourself off with this Groupon.

$19.99 for Registration, a Knit Hat, and an Afterparty ($40 Value)

Dressed in costumes, bikinis, and other quirky getups, Clevelanders leap into the frigid wintry waters of Lake Erie in a show of support for diabetes and Parkinson's research.

Cleveland Polar Plunge

Winter's icy grip is harshest in the water, yet the intrepid souls who sign up for the Cleveland Polar Plunge thumb their noses at Father Winter for a good cause and, of course, a party. Each pays for the privilege to dive into the frigid shallows of Lake Eerie, their money and that of the event's sponsors going to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Team Fox, the Parkinson's disease research organization founded by Michael J. Fox. After the event, each cold-weather diver warms up with a knit cap and happy-hour festivities with drinks and food at Liquid where Masters of Disasters will play a live set.

The Groupon Guide to: Short-Story Topics

The hardest part of writing a short story is what to do with all the millions of dollars it will earn you, but the second hardest part is coming up with an idea for one. Here is a free list of ideas for short stories that we would be thrilled if anyone used:

  • While her husband is at work, a sad woman looks at a photograph of her sister on the beach.
  • Men come to blows over whose father was more distant.
  • It’s like a sheep or a mouse or something but it talks like a human would and has an iPhone. You don’t have to try very hard on this one.
  • A lady and a man are on a plane on their way to go hunting in Africa. They are married but they do NOT like each other.
  • A thinly veiled story from your life that follows no plot structure because that’s probably what you’re gonna write anyway.
  • What if horses rode humans around for work and sport? What then, huh?

What are some good ideas for short stories? Find out in today’s Groupon Guide.
