Coconut Cay Resort & Marina

Built in the early 1950s, Coconut Cay Resort & Marina has been recently renovated in the style of a Bahamian village, reflecting its island setting in the heart of the Florida Keys. The New York Times named the area the Family Destination of the Year in 2010, a sign of the Keys' recent transformation into a family-friendly retreat from a spring-break mecca for students to catch up on quiet reading.

At Coconut Cay, many of the spacious rooms feature multiple beds and small kitchenettes for cooking right in the room. Two outdoor pools glimmer in the sun, serving as a relaxing oasis beyond the marina, with easy access to the schools of snapper, grouper, and yellowtail in the barrier reef about three miles away. Fishing rods and paddleboats are provided to guests free of charge, along with complimentary kayaks and bicycles for exploring the cay in search of solid-gold bananas.

Just a coconut's roll away, Sombrero Beach is home to sandy shores and adjacent parks, and loggerhead turtles often roam the beach at night to lay their eggs during nesting season (April through October). Other local points of interest include Pigeon Key, a small island with a historic district marking where workers on the Florida East Coast Railway set up a camp to build the trains' giant wooden toy whistles.
