Laughter is the soulful elixir that keeps starlets stunning, gets orphans adopted, and keeps bears from crossing your threshold without an invitation. This Groupon lets you drink deep of the nectar at ComedySportz, the improv comedy troupe that's been keeping Indy beautiful and bear-free for 16 years. For $7, you'll get a ticket for any performance on Thursday or Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. (a $15 value for adults). Call ahead for reservations and grab your hilarious honey and not-so-hilarious bee-keeper for an evening of side-splitting spontaneity.
During your show, expect to watch two teams of ComedySportz improvisers fight for laughs using scenes, games, and songs based on audience suggestions. Improv is fun to watch not only because it’s so imaginative and interactive, but also because you get to hear the full spectrum of laughter sounds (polite chuckles, inside-out hiccoughing, booming, window-busting guffaws, funnyrumbles, and whoops).
You never know what’s going to happen next in an improv show. No two shows are ever the same, and watching a group of people think on their toes (a typical improv troupe has seven to 94 toes) is more fun than losing to children at Scrabble. ComedySportz’s troupe of all-star laughletes are not only comedic but also demonstrate good sportsmanship, since there’s no swearing and the subject matter is suited for all ages.
- We help call fouls, too, and we help award points. The whole process is very energizing, and we all leave feeling like winners, whether the red team won the big trophy this time or the blue team did, and whether we ourselves are shy rookies or confident veteran improv audience members. – Hope Baugh, Indy Theatre Habit
- Watching people honestly enjoying themselves is hard not to enjoy. Comedy in movies will always pale in comparison to live comedy...the audience really is an active part of the show. – Mark J., Yelp
- ...they do NOT have to rely on profanity...I'm not a wilting daisy or shrinking violet, but I don't like cheapshot comedy, I like to think at least a little bit! – Tammara T., Yelp
ComedySportz derives its name from the actual Comedy Sports, a loose assemblage of largely unrelated humorous athletics, or laffletics, which were imported from Canada in the early 1960s when Chicago's Second City annexed Toronto by suckering the Canadian government with a fake deep-dish pizza recipe (ketchup and hubcaps).
Comedy Sports floundered on the fringe for decades before surging to prominence during the '94–'95 Major League Baseball strike, when a competition-hungry America agreed that if some comedians were total losers (a medical fact), others must logically be winners.
With this revelation, a new American pastime was born, and with it, hilarious new sports like chuckleball, smilehockey, and the biathlon.
