The Issue: High Cost of Graphing Calculators

Although classrooms in Peninsula High School have graphing calculators available for students to use during math classes, they’re unable to take them home for their homework or exam preparation. Since math is a sequential subject that builds off previous lessons and homework, most high-school students have to purchase their own calculators for home use to be successful and keep up with their peers. However, graphing calculators can cost about $90—a burden for families with low incomes—and roughly one-fourth of the students at Peninsula High School qualify for free or reduced-price school meals, according to the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction’s Washington State Report Card, indicating that as many come from underserved families.

The Campaign: Providing Graphing Calculators to Students

If 45 people donate $10 to this Grassroots campaign, then Communities In Schools of Peninsula can provide graphing calculators for 10 Peninsula High School students from underserved families, thanks to matching donations from Real Carriage Doors. Donations will be matched up to $450. Each additional $90 raised will purchase a graphing calculator for another Peninsula High School student.

All donations will be matched up to a $450 total by Real Carriage Doors.

Communities In Schools of Peninsula

For students to be successful in school, they need to know that they’re safe and secure and that people care about them. Working with this in mind, Communities In Schools of Peninsula rallies local support for children and provides programs and services to assist students in ways not always available through the school system. The organization takes a focused approach to helping kids: mentors and volunteers take time to get to know the children, and one mentor usually stays paired with the same students throughout the school year. With this approach, they can coordinate services that meet their students’ specific needs, from helping them get eyeglasses to providing one-on-one afterschool tutoring.

Communities In Schools of Peninsula’s programs include mentoring elementary- and middle-school students in reading and math, raising funds for school supplies for students in need, and supporting school strategies to eliminate bullying and harassment. The organization also connects students with summer-camp scholarships, empowering at-risk youth to stay out of trouble.
