Q&A with Tamie Odom, Owner of The Compass Rose
Tell us about your business.
We're an 1800s replica wooden, tall ship brigantine. Tons of fun is what the "Compass Rose" represents. Hosting everything from moonlight sails to weddings on board, she offers an unforgettable experience for all. Pirate gear or casual—you choose your setting when you charter a private sail excursion for up to 10 and the crew gives your friends and family a whole new meaning to the phrase "all inclusive."
What makes your business stand out?
Top notch, first class service sets the "Compass Rose" apart. Well, that and the fact that she's one of a kind. Completely restored to be the crown jewel on the lake shining brightly as an example of the past. Yardarms, square sails, and a cannon—need we say more? Johnny Depp, eat your heart out.
What inspired you to start or run this business?
Kids were our inspiration for taking the "Compass Rose" public. [She was] originally a private vessel, [but] when we realized her appeal to the children we decided it was time to share her. Then we discovered that every adult was just a kid at heart. They all love the Compass Rose and we love sharing her too.
What is your most popular offering?
Without a doubt our moonlight sails have been a huge hit. People love leaving at sunset and sailing into the moonlight. Romance, fun, and a bit of adventure is always tossed into the mix. You never quite know what surprises are in store with the Compass Rose. We've had everything from a live violinist on board to chinese lanterns! Of course, our parties at the dock are fabulous too. People rent the "Rose" for all kinds of occasions.
Anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
Coming aboard the "Compass Rose," whether for a short tour or a four-hour sail will be something you will experience, not just something to do. I say that because the "Rose" has a life of her own. It's why she has her own voice on Facebook. She will make you fall in love with her. I don't have to do that. Her beauty, grace, and might stand alone.
What is the best reaction you’ve ever gotten from a customer?
Said Reese upon having his 18th birthday aboard the "Rose," "This is the best day of my life! I thought it couldn't get any better and then you put me in that thing (the yardarm chair). I will never forget this day." And from another customer, "You made our anniversary the best I can remember. The moonlight sail was dreamy."
What’s your favorite part about your job?
When I, as the "Pirate Queen," finally get to sit down and chat with my customers aboard the ship, it is lovely. I hear how they are feeling about this once in a lifetime experience (that I sometimes take for granted) and it rejuvenates the "why" for me all over again. I truly love to hear about them and their lives, and make a connection. We have repeat customers and I think it is because they become our friends.
