Cooking Skills Academy

Cooking Skills Academy's four resident chefs oversee hands-on cooking classes in a custom-designed gourmet kitchen. During the Quick and Easy, One Pot Wonders class, students learn to prepare four healthy, flavorful meals in 20–30 minutes each and hone an arsenal of cooking techniques more efficient than trying to convince raw asparagus to walk across hot coals. In the It's All About the Stove Top course, chefs-to-be practice culinary arts such as braising, knife handling, sautéing, and caramelizing to craft a menu of applejack pork, southwestern rice, and lemon-blueberry bread pudding. Like sculptors constructing busts of Martin Luther from limburger cheese, amateur food artists can snack on their masterpieces as they go, and take home a copy of each recipe used in the session. Check Cooking Skills Academy’s online calendar for a full list of class times and dates for such sessions as hands-on pasta making, Knife Skills 101, and Date Night Sushi 101.

The Groupon Guide to: Still-Life Painting

Still-life paintings are the easiest kind to do because everything you’re painting is already dead, thus holding still. Try out these subjects for your next still life:

  • A skull being used as a vase
  • A bunch of mangoes in a bowl but one of them is purple
  • Two teakettles. They don’t have faces, but do they somehow seem to be … talking to each other?
  • Onions
  • The bust of an ancient emperor sitting on a little girl’s nightstand
  • A wooden table strewn with a bunch of dead quail
  • A harpsichord gathering dust in a corner while a shiny electric guitar sits, well cared for, in a stand
  • A man’s hat, pipe, and book all sit on his chair, which has the imprint of his body, but there is no sign of the man.
  • A bunch of absurdly wet fruit

What can you do with a bunch of absurdly wet fruit?
