The procedure can sharpen vision blurred by nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, diminishing patients’ dependence on glasses or contacts. Vision usually improves as early as the day after surgery. To begin, the doctor creates a corneal flap with a microkeratome, and then uses the laser to vaporize the corneal tissue under this flap, increasing or reducing the cornea’s curvature depending on need. This modifies the way the light enters the eye, clearing up vision. The doctor folds the flap back over the cornea, and it begins healing without stitches. Patients remain awake throughout the surgery, which only lasts approximately 15 minutes.
