An adamant athlete from the age of 6, Michelle Larson knew she was destined for an athletic career—she just didn’t know the details. She honed her sporting prowess in swimming, track, and water polo throughout high school and college, and majored in health and sports studies at the University of Northern Iowa. Then, she sojourned through various careers as a professional personal trainer, a corporate fitness specialist, a nutrition consultant, and a group fitness instructor. It wasn’t until she began training in several CrossFit gyms throughout Chicago, however, that she found her fitness calling.
Today, Michelle owns and operates CrossFit Shoreside, coaching classes alongside a crew of fellow certified instructors. In her studio, nestled amid the shops and restaurants of downtown Evanston, trainers lead CrossFit and boot-camp classes throughout the week. Sessions center around exercises designed, like a Slinky outfitted with monster-truck tires, to increase functional mobility and flexibility, and coaches modify the sessions to include patrons with all kinds of fitness backgrounds. The gym even offers CrossFit classes for kids, where age-appropriate exercises encourage healthy habits at a young age, teaching students the benefits of an active lifestyle.
Coaching at every level of the workout world, CrossFit Shoreside owner Michelle Larson and coach Will Howard share more than two decades of motivational fitness experience. They devoted more than 10 of those years to mastering CrossFit-specific instruction, know-how that they now puts to use with the help of their talented team of fellow instructors. At a studio nestled amid the shops and restaurants of downtown Evanston, the team leads intense 60-minute sessions built on exercises designed to increase functional mobility and flexibility. Although the experience is always challenging, it's also for everyone; thanks to the classes' small size, coaches can scale and modify the workouts to integrate students of all ages and ability levels.
