The Issue: Literacy and Language Skills for Underserved Children

In 2010, 83% of underserved fourth graders who were eligible for free or reduced-price school lunch scored below the proficient reading level, as compared to 55% of their peers who were not eligible for free or reduced-price lunches, according to a Kids Count report compiled by the Annie E. Casey Foundation.

The Campaign: Providing Books for Children In Need

If 50 people donate $10, then Jumpstart for Young Children Inc. can provide 50 books to underserved children participating in its annual Read for the Record event. Each additional contribution will provide a book for another child. With a $10 donation, one copy of Lady Bug Girl & the Bug Squad, by Jacky Davis and David Soman, will be donated to a child in a low-income community, and you will have the option to receive a copy of the same book with shipping included. Alternatively, those that contribute to today's campaign can opt to donate two books to children in need rather than receiving a copy themselves. If you're purchasing this Groupon as a gift to send to another recipient, please purchase it as a separate transaction with appropriate shipping information.

Lady Bug Girl & the Bug Squad is this year's chosen book for children participating in Jumpstart for Young Children Inc.'s Read for the Record annual event. Jumpstart's Read for the Record will be held on October 4, 2012, through a partnership with the Pearson Foundation, with the aim to break the world record for the most people reading the same book at the same time. Last year, 2.2 million people participated in this event, and since 2006, the event has raised more than $7 million for early-education programs and has provided more than one million books to children from low-income backgrounds.

Jumpstart for Young Children, Inc.

Jumpstart, a national early-education organization, recruits and trains college students and other community members to help preschool children from low-income neighborhoods develop the language and literacy skills necessary to prepare them for school. Along with ongoing campaigns such as Read for the Record, Jumpstart works with children on a twice-weekly basis at locations across the country, building their vocabulary and reading skills.
