NewGround Theatre Dance Company's artistic director, Coleen Lorenz, brings a unique angle to her choreography: that of a therapist. Using her psychological training as a jumping-off point, Lorenz mixes the shimmering beauty of contemporary dance with wordless stories that, as she told the Belmont Patch, "work a lot with archetypes that carry a message and make people think." In her newest work, Axiom, she and her cadre of local dancers explore the central story of a man confronting his inner struggles, interacting with a mysterious series of individuals called the Pandora Seven. With allusions to Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, and the seven chakras of Eastern mystical traditions, the piece uses a mélange of modern dance styles mixed with clean, balletic lines to convey the difficulties and rewards of inner change. Patrons attending the premiere on August 10 can attend a meet and greet with the company while sampling complimentary wine and cheese and trying to round up enough dancers for an impromptu rendition of the Electric Slide.
