In its first summer season at the Santa Anita Racetrack, the popular Festival on the Green concert series unfurls an evening of entertainment across the plush grass of the historic track’s renovated infield. In five themed concerts, California Philharmonic maestro Victor Vener conducts the ensemble he founded 15 years ago. Ever the consummate showman, Vener injects witty commentary into each program. Strains of a Grieg piano concerto mingle with work by Andrew Lloyd Webber on July 28, and an even larger assortment of jazzy lyrics and show tunes break out of Broadway songbooks on August 11. The final concert of the season brings sounds of the silver screen into the open air with John Williams’s scores for films including Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark, rounded out by Beethoven's equally cinematic Ode to Joy.
The tapestry of sound taking shape on the stage is only the most prominent element in the evening's multisensory feast, as the San Gabriel Mountains jockey for attention in the background and jumbo video screens broadcast the musicians' dexterity in detail across the field. Before the show, kids can jump on a pony ride or tickle a flute in the musical-instrument petting zoo as their parents unpack picnic baskets and uncork bottles of wine. At night's end, all can mingle with the maestro and guest performers at a public after-party where the preshow's live jazz resumes.
The mission of the California Philharmonic and its founder, renowned conductor Victor Vener, is simple: to increase awareness and appreciation of classical music. Their method, however, is anything but traditional—instead of staging events in formal halls or black-tie stairwells, the ensemble presents their crowd-pleasing concerts at the Santa Anita Race Track and the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Combining pop music, Broadway standards, and legendary symphonies, Vener creates dynamic programs that aim to catch the imagination. Along with engaging performances and tuneful collaborations, the Cal Phil also hosts family nights to encourage children’s symphonic education.
