Guides take out parties of up to four anglers aboard a covered 26-foot Sea Ray with a 300-horsepower Yamaha to fish for salmon along the south coast of Vancouver Island. Targeted species and fishing methods vary according to season. From autumn through spring, for example, charters focus on 5- to 15-pound feeder chinooks with light tackle. Halibut charters head out every month except January. Guests may also schedule a crabbing or prawning charter instead, and can include a wildlife tour to see animals such as bald eagles, sea lions, and porpoises.

The fishermen lay their catches out on the dock: a haul of meaty king salmon, halibut, and toothy ling cod.
