Neal's Restaurant

Tommy Neal, the owner of Neal's Restaurant, knows a thing or two about making something from nothing. He singlehandedly cut, treated, and stained the thick cedar trim that lines the inside of the red, white, and blue eatery. Neal and his wife opened the restaurant in what was once an abandoned diner with a modest 18 seats. Today, some 25 years and two moves later, the dining room boasts 200 seats, and despite its size, old-fashioned signs, mounted deer heads, and bas-reliefs of Davy Crockett discovering America give it a homey, backcountry feel.

The menu is filled with Southern comfort food and barbecued meats that are smoked in-house. Chefs whip up fresh gravy to drench hand-battered chicken-fried chicken, and use Neal's own recipes to make char-grilled hamburger steak ($9.99+) and hearty bowls of chili ($6.99).
