Donation allows students to plant and care for native trees and plants across the country

The Issue: Breathable Air Polluted by Carbon Emissions

The United States has produced about six billion metric tons of carbon emissions from energy consumption every year for the past decade, according to data from the US Energy Information Administration. Thanks to the plant kingdom's natural process of offsetting carbon emissions by converting carbon dioxide into oxygen, planting one tree is comparable to taking 40 cars off the road for an entire year.

The Campaign: Planting Native Trees Across the Country

For every $10 raised by this Grassroots campaign, National Wildlife Federation (NWF) will work with students to plant and care for one tree. Donations will be matched by American Beauties Native Plants®, which will provide $20 worth of plants for every $10 tree donation (up to 3,000 plants). NWF aims to plant 75,000 native trees during National Wildlife Week, which takes place Monday, March 18, to Sunday, March 24, in celebration of the organization’s 75th anniversary. Students will learn about and care for each planted tree during its critical first year of growth. By working with students, NWF teaches youth in underserved communities about trees and their importance in the ecosystem.

Each $10 tree donation will be matched with $20 worth of plants by American Beauties Native Plants® up to a total of 3,000 plants.

About (Grassroots) National Wildlife Federation

Iowa cartoonist Ding Darling was an avid waterfowl hunter when the Dust Bowl swept through the prairie. Frustrated by the destruction, he appealed to then-President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who appointed him head of the U.S. Biological Survey. He created the Federal Duck Stamp to raise money for waterfowl management, but wanted a bigger stick to tackle the problem of wildlife conservation. Then in 1936, Darling convinced the president to invite more than 2,000 hunters, anglers, and conservationists to the first North American Wildlife Conference, where they created the General Wildlife Federation to help protect the environment.

Today under a different name, National Wildlife Federation is America’s largest conservation organization, having inspired people to protect wildlife for our children’s future for more than 75 years. NWF focuses on connecting kids with nature, stopping carbon pollution, and protecting and restoring wildlife habitats. The organization represents the power and commitment of 4 million members and supporters joined by 48 state affiliates across the country.
