For 85 years, the Rockettes have dazzled with precision dancing, luminous costumes, and high-kicking lines that comb the sky with pointed toes. And for 80 of those years, they’ve boosted American spirits and dilated American pupils with the sheer spectacle of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. This year’s cherished Yuletide cavalcade celebrates both anniversaries with a dazzling blend of 21st-century technology, timeless showstoppers, and glamorous Rockette costumes.
This tour reaches back even beyond the troupe’s history as a New York institution with a stop in St. Louis, where the Rockettes were founded as the Missouri Rockets in 1925. The show bridges the distance between past and present and East Coast and Midwest by using a 50-foot LED screen to transport the dancers and the audience to the streets of New York, Times Square, and the North Pole. In a surprise cameo, Santa Claus demonstrates exactly how he is able to visit every house on Christmas Eve before unveiling a workshop full of living toys performing selections from The Nutcracker. Not to be outdone, the dancers enliven the repetitive structure of “The Twelve Days of Christmas” with an endlessly inventive tap routine. And no Christmas with the Rockettes would be complete without the clockwork-precise Parade of the Wooden Soldiers, as the Rockettes cascade back like human dominoes while wearing Vincente Minnelli’s classic 1933 costume.
In addition to the classics, five new numbers propel the dancers into ever-higher kicks and more complex routines as they parade across new sets that twinkle with immersive special effects. Among them is “New York at Christmas,” which sends the Rockettes rolling past Big Apple landmarks on a life-size double decker bus.
Due to security restrictions, G-Passes must be printed out and presented in person at the event. They cannot be redeemed through Groupon’s mobile app.
Peabody Opera House
Before it was known as the Peabody Opera House, the venue on Market Street lent its stage to history. Harry S. Truman delivered the final speech of his 1948 campaign there, sealing his presidential reelection; the Rat Pack played a benefit for a halfway house there in 1965; and, throughout the '70s and '80s, such legends as David Bowie and Billy Joel appeared under its intricate canopy. But, come 1991, the opera house almost became history itself when its doors closed. Two decades would pass before it would reopen, rechristened as the Peabody Opera House.
Even after such an extended dormancy, the venue maintains the grandeur that attracted so many stars and prompted exclamations such as "Wowzers!" and "This place flips my lid!" Intricate, gilded carvings ring the stage and balconies, accenting the openings that run along the theater's sides. Meanwhile, a great blue dome bubbles up from the ceiling's center, etched with the outline of the house's patron bear.
