The Issue: Therapeutic influence of Dancing

The National Cancer Institute estimates that more than 41% of people born today will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime, based on rates from 2007–2009. For people affected by cancer, physical and emotionally uplifting activities can make a big difference, positively influencing their daily life. Dancing in particular has been shown to have a therapeutic effect on patients with cancer, reducing anxiety and strengthening social bonds, according to an article in Arts & Health.

The Campaign: Teaching Children How to Dance

If this Grassroots campaign raises $650, then Lineage Dance Company can sponsor children in one year of monthly dance classes, thanks to matching donations up to $650 by Elizabeth's Canvas. Each additional $650 raised will contribute to developing lesson plans and distribution materials so this program may be implemented in branches across the nation.

In monthly classes, youth from the Children's Corner program at Cancer Support Community Pasadena, who have at least one parent that has been diagnosed with or died from cancer, use dance to express their emotions and find their individuality. The one-hour classes explore various styles of hip-hop, encouraging youth to express themselves creatively and learn challenging choreography while finding a place in a supportive community of peers.

All donations will be matched up to a $650 total by Elizabeth's Canvas.

Lineage Dance Company

Lineage Dance Company demonstrates the skills of its students through stage shows held every year. The company believes that the arts can create a community and dance can help people heal. As part of its dedication to making dance accessible to everyone, Lineage Dance Company works with local nonprofit organizations to combine the arts with efforts to do good.

The organization is currently working with Cancer Support Community Pasadena (CSCP) to provide hip-hop dance classes for children from the Children's Corner program, whose parents were diagnosed with or died from cancer. CSCP operates the Children's Corner program for youth aged 6–17 to help them cope with the fear and anxiety resulting from the effects of cancer through weekly support groups and activities.
