The Issue: Threats to Survival of Black-Footed Ferret

Though the black-footed ferret was thought to be globally extinct, scientists discovered a small population of remaining creatures in 1981 in a remote region of Wyoming, according to a report from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Through the use of emergency captive-breeding measures beginning in 1991, nearly 3,000 black-footed ferrets have been released into the wild at 19 sites in North America. However, although 3,000 animals are necessary to recover the species, fewer than 1,000 live in the wild today.

As of 2008, the black-footed ferret remained one of the most endangered mammals in the United States, according to another report from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reviewing the status of the animal for the previous five years. These animals continue to face threats to their survival, including a reduction in the prairie-dog colonies upon which they rely for their own habitats, and diseases that include canine distemper, which is 100% fatal to black-footed ferrets.

The Campaign: Funding Vaccinations for Canine Distemper

Every $10 donation−up to 1,000 donations−to this Grassroots campaign helps World Wildlife Fund (WWF) purchase a vaccine that protects black-footed ferret against canine distemper. Vaccines will be administered by either WWF or one of its partners. Any donations beyond $10,000 will go to support WWF’s general conservation work.

WWF estimates that approximately 1,000 black-footed ferrets–including ferrets living in the wild, captive breeding facilities and reintroduction sites throughout the Northern Great Plains–need vaccinations.
