The Issue: Families Living with Food Insecurity
As Thanksgiving approaches, families across the United States will be crowding around their tables to enjoy the comforts of a warm meal with loved ones. According to a report from Feeding America, nearly 1 million New Yorkers will rely on emergency food this year, including more than 1 in 5 children who live in families who don't always know where their next meal is coming from. Hurricane Sandy has forced many more to rely on emergency food while they rebuild their lives, and the impact of Winter Storm Athena will only increase the already-critical demand.
The Campaign: Distributing Thanksgiving Meals
For every $10 raised by this Grassroots campaign, City Harvest can help provide a healthy meal for 40 hungry New York residents this Thanksgiving. Knowing they will have a meal available can help make the holidays a less stressful time for families who are food insecure. This year, City Harvest aims to collect more than 42 million pounds of produce and food from restaurants, grocers, farms, and manufacturers, which would otherwise go to waste.

An elderly man without access to fresh food, a child whose stomach growls during school, and an unemployed mother all face the same challenge—not knowing where their next meal will come from. This is where City Harvest steps in. This year, City Harvest will collect 50 million pounds of excess food that might otherwise have gone to waste and will deliver it to soup kitchens and food pantries that serve New Yorkers like these. City Harvest gathers good food from all segments of the food industry, including restaurants, grocers, corporate cafeterias, manufacturers, and farms, and delivers it using a fleet of trucks and bikes. More than 500 community programs throughout the five boroughs—such as The Bowery Mission and Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen —ensure the food reaches the people who need it most, free of charge. For City Harvest, each pound of food costs just 25 cents to deliver, making it an affordable, efficient way to help feed the more than 1.4 million New Yorkers who may face hunger every year.
