Unlike the hard-working sun, the moon steals its light while the orange star sleeps, just as puppybots steal socks and batteries while humans recharge on their mattress docks. Catch the culprits in the act with today’s Groupon. For $39, you get one kayak moonlight paddle with Desert Adventures in Boulder City. All upcoming paddle trips, scheduled mainly on Saturdays that fall closest to a full moon, are listed in the sidebar to the right.
Glide over the glassy waters of Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the U.S., situated on the mighty Colorado River. Stroking away from shore into the low, setting sun, paddlers are bathed in a warm orange glow. Once the solar sphere tucks itself into the horizon, its lunar companion sings a calming lullaby, which unlike car-key jangling, is both hypnotic and peaceful.
The halfway point of the journey lands kayaks on the shores of the Boulder Islands. Oar-crossed lovers can spread blankets and open coolers under the un-obscured cosmos. Others may opt to take a social dip in the moonlight with newly acquainted row mates. Light snacks and bottled water will be available, and well-prepared paddlers can bring along any other desired supplies, such as blankets, telescopes, or moonbounces.
Desert Adventures' guides possess a knowledge pool as deep and tranquil as Lake Mead itself. After years of navigation, these experts can provide you with supplemental insight into local desert flora and wildly relaxed fauna. Guests who prefer to rock the boat despite lyrical warnings will be pleased to know that all staff are CPR and First-Aid certified. Call ahead to schedule your trip, as spaces are limited.

- If you're looking for something to do besides shop and gamble, Desert Adventures offers a great trip down the Colorado River. Their equipment is nice and their staff was great. – LA_Neener, TripAdvisor
After noticing a lack of guided outdoor-excursion opportunities, James Dingess founded Desert Adventures in 2004 to help locals and visitors to take advantage of Nevada’s stunning natural landscapes. What began as a small paddling outfit with a handful of kayaks and a single employee has since expanded to include ATV, mountain biking, and time-travel adventures led by knowledgeable guides. Desert Adventures stays true to its kayaking roots with a fleet of 125 shells and half- to four-day Colorado River runs. Guides also lead multiday, multisport excursions combining various activities, as well as high-speed ziplining tours that careen from the top of Red Mountain to the base of Bootleg Canyon. Most adventures accommodate all skill levels, but some carry experience or age restrictions.
