In a Nutshell

Professional photographers teach students how to light and frame images of natural sights

The Fine Print

Photographers swiftly capture what sluggish painters cannot, such as the sparkle of a fleeting smile, the identity of a media-shy superhero, or the split second a peregrine falcon breaks the sound barrier. Attain photographic know-how with this Groupon.

Choose Between Two Options

  • $49 for a three-hour Composition in the Field workshop for one (a $99 value)
  • $89 for a three-hour Composition in the Field workshop for two (a $198 value)

Composition in the Field workshops introduce students to the technical aspects of their cameras, including shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. After instruction on controls, students take to the field with professional photographers to discover techniques and tips for capturing powerful images. Class sizes are kept small, at a maximum of 10 attendees, and new dates and times are added based on demand. Upcoming photo ops include capturing the exotic animals of the National Cathedral, the historical surroundings of the National Mall, and the buildings of Georgetown. Participants should bring their own digital cameras and equipment.

Check out the full schedule for more information. Classes are held indoors or outdoors depending on the weather.

Digital Photo Academy

As memory cards replaced film reels, many photographers—both professional and amateur—felt befuddled by the new technology. That's where Digital Photo Academy stepped in. Since 2007, the business has facilitated workshops that explore all aspects of digital imagery, from operating cameras and uploading digital files to editing images and airbrushing realistic mustaches. Seasoned professionals lead the courses, helping understudies hone their use of light, framing, and timing. Students furnish their own cameras, and can tote along any ancillary equipment such as tripods, laptops, and flashes that relate to the course at hand.

The Groupon Guide to: Phone Greetings

Any boring person with a tongue in their face can pick up the phone and say “hello.” Here are some creative ways to answer your phone:

  • "Hi, who is this? No, don’t tell me! I want to have a confusing conversation."

  • "Hello, you’ve reached the Walking and Talking hotline. I just got a brand-new mobile phone, so I’ll be moving around my house and going to the bathroom while I talk to you."

  • "Gavin sucks! Just kidding, Gavin, you don’t suck. Oh, this is Gavin’s mom? Oh, I’m so sorry, Mrs. Gavin. I’ll go get my mom."

  • "Hello, Culver household. Margaret speaking. Edmond listening. Children not listening but tucked snugly in their beds. Fear hiding quietly under the floorboards."

  • "Hey there! Thanks for calling! I’m busy, so call back and leave a message."

  • "Hey there! Oh gosh darn it, you were trying to leave that message, weren’t you? OK, here we go again."

  • "Hey there! OH, SHOOT! OH, SHOOT SHOOT SHOOT!"

What’s with Gavin’s voice?
