In a Nutshell

Professional photographers teach students how to light and frame images of natural sights and landmarks

The Fine Print

Photographers swiftly capture what sluggish painters cannot, such as the sparkle of a fleeting smile, the identity of a media-shy superhero, or the split second a peregrine falcon breaks the sound barrier. Attain photographic know-how with this Groupon.

Choose Between Two Options

  • $49 for a three-hour Composition in the Field workshop for one (a $99 value)
  • $89 for a three-hour Composition in the Field workshop for two (a $198 value)

Composition in the Field workshops introduce students to the technical aspects of their cameras, including shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. After instruction on controls, students take to the field with professional photographers to discover techniques and tips for capturing powerful images. Class sizes are kept small, at a maximum of 10 attendees, and new dates and times are added based on demand. Upcoming photo ops include capturing the Detroit Eastern farmer's market, downtown Detroit, and Greektown. Participants should bring their own digital cameras and equipment.

Check out the full schedule for more information. Classes are held indoors or outdoors depending on the weather.

Digital Photo Academy

As memory cards replaced film reels, many photographers—both professional and amateur—felt befuddled by the new technology. That's where Digital Photo Academy stepped in. Since 2007, the business has facilitated workshops that explore all aspects of digital imagery, from operating cameras and uploading digital files to editing images and airbrushing realistic mustaches. Seasoned professionals lead the courses, helping understudies hone their use of light, framing, and timing. Students furnish their own cameras, and can tote along any ancillary equipment such as tripods, laptops, and flashes that relate to the course at hand.

The Groupon Guide to: Sniffing Out Baloney

Though most folks are honest, the occasional huckster may try to swindle you. Suss out their malarkey with this Groupon Guide to sniffing out baloney:

Your employee is late because his grandmother died again:
Sounds like a buncha hogwash.

A door-to-door salesman say his vacuum cleaner makes all others obsolete:
This guy’s trying to feed you applesauce.

The oil-change guy says you need a complete engine overhaul:
Motor oil? More like banana oil. Tell him no dice.

A shifty local politician says he’s looking out for you:
Poppycock and tommyrot.

Your blind date can’t see you again because you compulsively throw around antiquated terms for skepticism:
Who needs 'em? They’re clearly fulla horsefeathers—better to die alone than get hoodwinked.

How can you tell when someone is lying to you?
