After having 70% of her quadriceps removed because of a tumor, Shaady Fakhrai was indefinitely confined to a wheelchair. Though relearning to walk was the first step, her ultimate goal was to get back on her beloved bicycle. She dedicated herself to exceeding the expectations of her recovery, and regained enough leg strength to start riding. In fact, she was so grateful to be mobile again that she eventually found herself cycling up to 40 miles a day. She couldn’t even bear to tear herself away from her favorite pastime to go to work, so she gave up her teaching career and started a pedicab business.

But, Shaady didn’t completely abandon her educator instinct. In fact, she guarantees that tourists and locals alike can learn up to 10 new things about DC during her tours. She and her team lead sightseeing outings that take visitors past the National Mall or the Tidal Basin, or they can pedal Washingtonians deep into the ‘hood of their choice to introduce them to great bars, new restaurants, and the fire hydrants that know the best neighborhood gossip. Passengers can also embark on themed explorations with topics as varied as the Washington Wizards, the Lincoln assassination, and wine tasting.
