Discovery Museum and Planetarium
Founded in 1962, the nonprofit Discovery Museum and Planetarium leverages decades worth of science, technology, engineer, and math experience to ensnare the senses with 20,000 square feet of interactive science and technology exhibits, a 124-seat planetarium, and a variety of educational programs. Three floors of permanent and rotating exhibits, such as the Sound and Light Galleries, invite kids to mix sounds and colors and use an optical sensory-controlled drum set to try their hand at Keith Moon solos or the sound John Rockefeller made as he pounded his oil barrels with thick wads of cash. The Preschool Power exhibit entices pintsize patrons with cushy play structures, and the Solar Legos exhibit harnesses the power of the sun to fuel miniature motors. The 33.4-foot dome of the recently updated planetarium hosts images fired from a traditional Spitz 512 Planetarium Projector, which screens educationally entertaining astronomical shows, giving students a view of the night sky unclouded by light pollution or feral parade floats. The museum also promotes intellectual stimulation with a variety of camps and educational programs, such as the Challenger Learning Center, where students cultivate navigational, robotics, and communication skills in a simulated space station.
