Q&A with Joel Thompson, Owner/instructor
When and how did you first develop a passion for your work?
I was a whitewater and sea kayak instructor and guide for nine years, so stand-up paddleboarding felt like the perfect extension of my love of the water. I have also raced in many different bike disciplines and attempt to ride or exercise outside daily. I started Dog Star Adventure Tours in order to share my passion for exploring the amazing natural area in the Northwest and beyond.
I'm a first-timer. How do you get me ready for the experience?
The beauty of stand-up paddleboarding (also known as SUP) is that in the correct environment, it's extremely safe and the learning curve is quick. We provide PFD's, which are inflatable belt packs, so if you fall in you will float. We also teach you how to get back on the board in a few steps. The whole process of learning gives you a sense of accomplishment in a short period of time.
As the old adage says, "Stuff happens." What training do you and your staff have to stay ahead of the unexpected?
I have been apart of the watersports community for more than 17 years. In that time, I've taught countless numbers of individuals and couples how to kayak, canoe, and stand-up paddleboarding. I have been AC-certified, CPR and first aid certified, and advanced wilderness first aid certified. We keep a ratio of instructors to a max of four-to-one to insure safety, enhance communication, and guarantee personalized instruction.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
Stand-up paddleboarding is about having fun. That is the experience that Dog Star Adventure Tours is providing to our students. It's an activity that is extremely social and appropriate for all ages.

“Joel, our instructor was laid back, calm, informative in the most friendly manner. In fact, my husband, who was not able to stand on the paddle board, is getting a supplemental lesson from Joel next week. The Tualatin River is an ideal place to learn--Joel was careful to show us where to paddle to avoid rocks and downed limbs. Thanks, Joel, it was fun.”
“So much fun! He did a great job. Does a wonderful job teaching the basics+ in paddle boarding.”

“I would strongly recommend beginners to watch a u-tube video clip of paddle boarding just to have an idea. It will built your confidence and as Joel take you out on the river you will enjoy paddling and being balanced, and all the other tricks, turning, slowing down, pulling up to dock or next to someone and stopping whether you're sitting, kneeling or even standing on the board. He will also show you how to turn this into a work out, working your abs, upper body and toning your legs as you keep your balance when you're padding, or simply relaxed and enjoying the wild life.”
