$12 for $25 Worth of Puerto Rican Cuisine

The menu of authentic Puerto Rican cuisine ranges from mofongo—garlicky mashed plantains—with fried chicken ($9.99) to slow-roasted pork shoulder ($9.99) and shrimp sautéed in garlic ($10.99).

El New Yorican Puerto Rican Restaurant

El New Yorican Puerto Rican Restaurant's cooks fill their menu with authentic Puerto Rican recipes by way of the Bronx that drew effusive praise from the Phoenix New Times. New Times reporter Laura Hahnefeld describes owner Alberto Rivera’s penchant for chatting with new and returning guests as they dine on the _cocina criolla_––creole cooking––distinguished by influences from the mix of indigenous tribes, Spanish settlers, and African slaves who populated the island in centuries past.

One of the signature dishes is mofongo—a hearty serving of garlicky mashed plantains—which chef Haydee Sanchez demonstrated on COX 7. After deep-frying the plantains, Sanchez pulverizes them with garlic in a pilon, a Puerto Rican–style mortar and pestle, before centering the mixture on a plate and surrounding it with a moat of spiced shrimp or fried chicken to fend off vegetarian Gauls. Plantains can also be found twice-fried and served with garlic sauce as an appetizer, and fried pork chops, chicken stew, and shrimp with garlic or salsa criolla star on other dishes.

The Groupon Guide to: Bettering Yourself

Everyone starts as a blank canvas, but fortunately, life provides us with all the colors needed to paint a masterpiece. Here are some things you can do every week to fulfill your destiny as a painting metaphor:

  • Make a new recipe. Mixing different kinds of cereal together counts.

  • Read a kind of book you wouldn't normally read. Maybe the instruction book for a vacuum you no longer own, or if you don't have any books, staple a bunch of menus together and say that's a book.

  • Quit a bad habit. We all love waking up in the middle of the night to break every single one of our dishes, but when you think about it, is it really doing us any good?

  • Get involved in your community. See which of your neighbors leave their doors unlocked and surprise them by spilling one of your new cereal recipes all over their floor.

  • Exercise. Chase every animal you see. They would do it to you if they had the guts.

Can two different kinds of cereal in one bowl lead to a better you?
