CrossFit is a strength and conditioning workout designed for all levels of athletes that combines weightlifting, sprinting, and gymnastics. It is a multifaceted program used by many military special operations units, police academies, and champion martial artists.
The Fundamentals class, which teaches participants integral CrossFit fundamentals, including demonstrating how to lift weights safely and efficiently, is required for students who have not taken CrossFit classes before.
Bolstered by a master’s in exercise physiology and a passion for body-sculpting competitions, Sarah Longshore opened Empire Fitness, a 24-hour gym stocked with modern equipment and amenities including a childcare center. She can often be found on the gym’s floor working out on Cybex leg-curl machines, offering words of encouragement to fellow exercisers, or curing dumbbells’ fear of heights in the weight room. Accompanied by a crew of experienced instructors, she offers group classes that motivate participants to burn fat by stepping on and around a step machine and singing along to an energetic soundtrack pulsing from overhead speakers. Also on the slate of classes are calorie incinerators such as barbell-heaving BodyPump and dance-based Zumba.

“I have never liked exercise but CrossFit Madison is fun! They graduate the workouts for people of all fitness levels. The trainers provide positive reinforcement and watch carefully to make sure the exercises are being done correctly to prevent injuries. The nutrition guidance is very helpful with one-on-one counseling if needed. Empire Fitness Madison is owned and managed by two women who are exceptional business managers with a great sense of dealing with people and setting a great example. They are very approachable and take time to help their clients. The staff is a cohesive team that is empowered in their work areas - very powerful and positive for a business. Great business model!!”
