Pilots are the cowboys of the air, roaming the wide-open skies and herding children's runaway balloons. Giddy up, up, and away with today's Groupon: for $175, you get a two-hour introductory flight lesson from Empire Flight Academy in Long Island (a $349 value). The flight package includes:

  • One hour in a Frasca SR-22 Simulator (a $60 value)
  • One hour of live flight in the state-of-the-art Cirrus SR20-GTS (a $179 value)
  • Guided instruction throughout (a $110 value for two hours’ guided instruction)

With high-tech, modern flight simulators and a fleet of advanced aircraft, Empire Flight Academy trains aeronautic apprentices in the invigorating art of airborne transit. The private introductory lesson begins with a one-hour session in the Frasca SR-22 simulator. The simulator accurately emulates in-flight conditions as a Cirrus-certified instructor walks students through basic functions such as straight and level flight, climbs, turns, and navigational principles, and students learn that the barrel roll is not a donut. Once educated in the simulator session, patrons take to the air in a Cirrus SR20-GTS, a glass-cockpit general-aviation airplane. Pilots-to-be pirouette through the stratosphere at speeds of up to 150 knots under the guidance of a sky sherpa, practicing maneuvers mastered in the simulation. Trainees should allow a total of 2.5 hours for the lesson to ensure adequate time for quality aircraft bonding and peacock-like displays of feather flaunting.

Empire Flight Academy

Authorized as a Cirrus, Diamond, Cessna, and Garmin G1000 education facility, Empire Flight holds courses that shuttle would-be cloud kickers toward their Private Pilot Certificate and Instrument Ratings through combined training on the ground, in the cockpit, and careful study of footage from Airplane!. Additionally, Empire Flight Academy’s offshoots—Empire Airways and Skyline Tours—offer ride-along sight-seeing jaunts of New York, as well as privately chartered flights.

The Groupon Guide to: Horsepower

The term "horsepower" describes how powerful a car is based on how many horses helped assemble it in the factory. Use the key below to find out how much horsepower you need:

100 horsepower: Use this nearly powerless car to transport workers around a farm or tie a sled to it and pull your child around.

200 horsepower: This slightly better car could go to the grocery store, but it might get tired on the way and have to stop to rest.

300 horsepower: This medium-powerful car should be used for commuting to work and making people on bikes nervous.

400 horsepower: This car is strong enough to take a group of children to school if they are too mean and funny to ride the bus with regular kids.

500 horsepower: This amount of horsepower makes your car almost 100% horse. You'll notice it has a kinship with humans, but a simultaneous need to roam the earth freely. Like any horse, this car should be used for towing speedboats and making everyone else on the highway jealous.

Why is my car so tired?
