Eating is necessary for human survival, along with breathing, sleeping, and remaining still while a curious velociraptor rummages through your closet. Practice survival tactics with today’s Groupon: for $15, you get $30 worth of seasonal fare and drinks at Eric’s Restaurant & Bar, located at the Palm Garden Hotel in Thousand Oaks.

The chefs at Eric’s gather local and seasonal produce and pluck greens from the restaurant’s garden for the new menu’s dishes, which are great for sharing. The California-style eatery’s emphasis on casual is demonstrated by simple entrees, such as grilled filet mignon with farm-fresh veggies ($19.95), and waiters in bathrobes. Pasta, fish, and meat cravings ebb on the arrival of fettuccine alfredo carbonara ($9.95) and prosciutto-wrapped shrimp ($15.95). On Saturday nights, a roasted prime-rib special fills bellies with fresh veggies and a choice of starches ($19.95), and on Friday nights, live music permeates the air. Eric’s full bar stocks a selection of California and house wines, which complement the menu and compliment local artist Laddy Doyle’s pieces.

The Groupon Guide to: Curing the Common Cold

The common cold has baffled scientists and outraged doctors since the dawn of time, leading to a proliferation of less-than-perfect homemade remedies. If you're down and out with a wintertime cold, try one of these practical curatives:

Some Rest and Plenty of Water
Effectiveness: 1/10
How It Works: It doesn't. Your body is already made of water, so drinking more can lead to a dangerous oxygen overdose. And while resting, all of your body's parts, including your bloodstream, stop moving, allowing the cold to spread further.

Chicken-Noodle Soup
Effectiveness: 4/10
How It Works: Chickens cannot catch or transmit human diseases, so their hearty broth inoculates you against further sickness. Start by pouring hot soup on any infected areas, but be prepared to take the soup internally if symptoms persist.

An Extra Dose of Smallpox Vaccine
Effectiveness: 7/10
How It Works: The smallpox particles contained in the vaccine will overpower and wipe out your cold. The downside is that you will now have smallpox.

The Love of a Family
Effectiveness: 10/10
How It Works: No one who is truly loved can ever get sick. If you don't have a ready supply of loving family members, most hospitals will allow you to rent some surrogate children who will swear a legal oath of fondness for only a few dollars a day.
