Dwindling supplies, deadly cold, and a darkness that seemed to close in on them from all sides. The expedition team knew they were doomed but continued to trek on across the desolate, frozen landscape. It was their only hope of survival.

They’d been hiking for days after a helicopter pilot mistakenly discharged them nearly 200 miles from the nearest inhabited settlement. The threat of hypothermia loomed—ever present, like a lioness stalking her prey—but the team faced an even more urgent threat: starvation. Inadequate supplies left them no choice but to feed themselves off the land—they ate what they could find, or kill. That decision not only led to their survival, it inspired the Russian-born team to open a Moscow restaurant featuring the type of far-northern fare that had seen them through. The eatery’s success led in turn to the creation of Expedition.com, a wilderness company inspired by northern culture.

Today, Expedition.com has a hand in nearly every aspect of the far-north wilderness industry. Its retail and online stores sell the company’s own brand of fishing supplies, cold-weather apparel, and camping gear including cookware, flashlights and lanterns, and hiking equipment. The company also organizes outdoor excursions such as the Expedition Trophy, a grueling winter car race that requires drivers to traverse icy terrain, navigate unmarked roads, and create the perfect road-trip mixtape. Despite a divergence from its original venture, Expedition’s wide-reaching umbrella still shelters a network of restaurants specializing in far-northern cuisine. Chefs prepare seasonal dishes using ingredients culled from harsh, northern environs including grouse, white salmon, and wild mushrooms, the same foods that once sustained a mislaid expedition team on the brink of starvation.
