The Issue: Ongoing Food Insecurity in the United States

In 2009, 14.7% of American households were food insecure and 5.7% of those existed with very low food security, according to a report from the US Department of Agriculture. Households with very low food security experience disruption in food intake or eating patterns due to a lack of resources or money. A lack of food can impact children more acutely than adults, affecting their educational and physical development in their formative years.

The Campaign: Distributing Healthful Meals to Local Youth

For every $10 this Grassroots campaign raises, Feeding Children Everywhere can provide 40 meals for children from low-income backgrounds. Volunteers pack meals at a massive event and use them to fill food-crisis pantries at local schools. Each meal contains rice, lentils, a blend of six dehydrated vegetables, and pink himalayan salt. Together, the ingredients are designed to regulate the body’s water content and pH balance and help combat the effects of hunger while providing an easily digestible source of protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals.

Feeding Children Everywhere

Don Campbell loved to cook from an early age. When he was 10 years old, he fed his family and developed his culinary skills. As an adult, Don kept an open table and would feed up to 40 children from the neighborhood at a time. After an earthquake struck Haiti in 2010, he and his wife, Kristen, were inspired to help people recuperate and sustain their lives. Gathering all $9,000 from their life-savings account, the couple partnered with a food-aid organization and founded Feeding Children Everywhere. Just 90 days later, they shipped the first 250,000 meals into Haiti.

Today, Feeding Children Everywhere mobilizes volunteers—from small groups to groups of thousands—who assemble nutritious meals for undernourished children. Since its inception, the organization has delivered more than five million meals around the world and filled the pantries of US public schools through its Love Local program.
