Old-World Charm Meets Contemporary Elegance at Boutique Hotel Facing Niagara River

Though it’s a relatively new hotel, Barton Hill Hotel & Spa is located on some historic land: the first battle of the War of 1812 took place here in Lewiston, New York. The surrounding Niagara region has a vintage feel to it as well; it’s lined with charming villages and idyllic vineyards. Barton Hill has old-fashioned look to its decor, too.

Beyond the white stone entrance, you'll find the hotel’s great room, which is anchored by stately columns and features Greek Revival furniture. Upstairs, spacious Portage Retreat rooms have a similar sense of grandeur, with varying decor that might include four-poster beds, heavy draperies, and wrought-iron chairs. All room come with a gas fireplace and an iPod docking station.

The Chantry Restaurant serves inventive cocktails alongside gourmet pub food. The menu rotates weekly, and it might include parmesan baked tilapia ($19) and seared strip steak ($24). On the breakfast menu, you’ll typically find dishes such as eggs benedict or an egg frittata.

Lewiston, New York: Historic Town Minutes from Niagara Falls

Lewiston was one of western New York's earliest settlements, dating back to the 1600s. Today, its quaint streets are lined with antique stores and art galleries.

Just a 10-minute drive from the hotel is the Niagara Wine Trail, where you can find a handful of wineries. The area is best known for its ice wine, a sweet dessert varietal made from frozen grapes.

The Niagara River flows past the hotel, about 8 miles upstream from the American side of the falls. Roughly 600,000 gallons of water cascade over the brink each second at the falls, creating a thunderous roar while sending a cool mist into the air. Niagara Falls State Park offers a variety of lookout points, but one of the best is free: the Prospect Point Park observation tower soars 282 feet skyward, and you can travel up to the top to get panoramic views of the falls.
