Historic Boutique Hotel Steps from Capitol Building
Located about a block from the Florida Capitol building, Governors Inn was the obvious choice as the name for the 41-room boutique hotel in downtown Tallahassee. The moniker’s nod to Florida history is even more appropriate considering the historic landmarks within walking distance of the hotel. The hotel sits on the winding, cobblestone Adams Street Commons, which leads south to the 1845-built Old Capitol building, the Florida Supreme Court building, and Tallahassee City Hall. A short walk north on Adams leads to the Florida Governor’s Mansion, and four blocks west lies the Florida State University campus—home to the early-20th-century Wescott building. With a stately, elegant atmosphere that seems to complement such surroundings, Governors Inn makes for the ideal launching point to discover Tallahassee’s past.
Each of the hotel’s 41 rooms is named after a past Florida governor and has been furnished with antiques such as English writing desks and dark wood armoires. In Governor courtyard rooms, a set of french doors leads to a private balcony, and a spiral staircase connects the Governor loft suites’ fireplace-warmed first floor to the spacious bedrooms upstairs. Governors Chambers are roomy enough to accommodate families and each of their spirit animals with 15-foot vaulted ceilings, plush king-size beds, and separate sitting areas outfitted with sleeper sofas. A complimentary continental breakfast served in the Florida room jump-starts each day.
Tallahassee, Florida: Southern Charm with Historic Landmarks and Colorful Gardens
In contrast to the stereotypical image of Florida as a land overrun with palm trees and tourists, hilly Tallahassee exudes old southern charm, with its towering oaks and historical estates fronting the roads. In the historic downtown district, trolleys trundle past the Old Capitol as well as 19th-century homes and buildings. Ascend to the top of the newer Capitol building to see sweeping view of the coast, the city’s landmarks, and its graceful zeppelin ballets.
The nearby Apalachicola National Forest features trails that wend their way through caverns, picturesque waterways, and flowery prairies. For further nature-centric meanderings, the nearby Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park sprawls across more than 300 acres of ornamental gardens, where magnolias and dogwoods mingle with camellias and azaleas. Those looking to kayak or canoe can visit the park’s Lake Hall, which also attracts anglers for its largemouth bass and bluegill.
