Vibrant Victorian Farmhouse with Pinot Noir Vineyard

With its yellow-green wooden shutters and cornflower-blue exterior, High Meadows Vineyard Inn’s vibrant color scheme captures the eye, especially amid the rolling hills of Virginia’s wine country. A combination of an 1832 Federalist home and an 1882 Italianate Victorian farmhouse, High Meadows Vineyard Inn sits on a 13-acre plot of land, where it’s not uncommon to see a peacock roaming the meadows. With a pinot noir vineyard on its grounds, the vintage bed and breakfast charms guests with countryside simplicity.

At Horseshoe Bend Bistro and Taproom, located less than a mile from the inn, chefs craft 5-ounce filet mignon ($17.25), 8-ounce fresh grilled salmon ($19.76), and other European- and Southern-inspired cuisine. You can also take on a self-guided GPS tour to a handful of wineries in the area, and High Meadows will supply you with a picnic lunch. Stop in to sample wine at Blenheim Vineyards, where the winemakers grow seven grape varieties onsite.

Back at the inn, antique furniture trims each of the inn's guest rooms, many still with original finishes on the doors. In the Daffodil room, natural light seeps through a floor-to-ceiling bay window. An antique claw-foot tub and a wood-trimmed settee add Victorian luxury to the homey, modern quarters. In the Cottage suite, a skylight invites sunlight onto white-wicker rockers, and a private back deck overlooks the Virginian woodlands.

In the morning, onsite chefs craft gingerbread and crepes for breakfast, which can be tailored to accommodate guests with dietary restrictions or restraining orders against ketchup.

Scottsville, Virginia: Riverside Town in Virginia's Wine Country

Located in central Virginia, the former colonial village of Scottsville lies along the James River, making the town a popular spot for kayak and canoe trips. Along the river at Canal Basin Square, costumed performers pay homage to the village’s boating history by demonstrating mock canal locks and illustrating how to pole an old-fashioned bateau boat. Downtown Scottsville has five 19th-century churches, and its surrounding countryside contains more than 30 vineyards.

Roughly 30 minutes north is the town of Charlottesville, where you’ll find an abundance of historical sites, such as Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, vintage theaters, and the Monument to Presidential Campaign Blunders. Charlottesville is also home to the University of Virginia, which Travel + Leisure put on its list of America’s Most Beautiful College Campuses.
