Brand New Hilton Garden Inn next to Two Historical Cities

Lake Pontchartrain separates New Orleans from two historical cities: One of them, Covington, is layered with turn-of-the-century cottages and mature oaks. The other, Mandeville, was one of the first places you could hear jazz music outside of New Orleans, and some of its original 1920s jazz venues are still in operation today. The newly built Hilton Garden Inn is situated right between Covington and Mandeville, and you can easily access New Orleans by driving over the lake on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway.

While at the hotel, feel free to enjoy a hearty breakfast and dinner at the Great American Grill, or order room service in your king or two-queen guest room. Rooms are equipped with 32-inch LCD HD televisions and complimentary WiFi. Elsewhere, the property features a fitness center, and you can practice synchronizing your swims to a jazz trumpeter at the hotel’s outdoor pool and whirlpool.

Covington and Mandeville, Louisiana: Historical Cities Across the Lake from New Orleans

The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, made up of two parallel bridges, was inaugurated in 1956; at that time, it was the world’s longest bridge to exist above water. More importantly, the causeway allowed residents of New Orleans to live across the lake and easily commute to the city. In turn, Covington and Mandeville, situated just across the water, had huge population booms. They grew into little cultural centers of their own, gaining some of the food, people, and music that make New Orleans the cultural capital of the American South.

New Orleans’s first jazz acts didn’t have the luxury of driving across the causeway. Instead, musicians including Bunk Johnson, Buddy Petit, and Papa Celestin would take ferries across the lake to Mandeville to play in rambunctious clubs such as Ruby’s Roadhouse and the Dew Drop Jazz and Social Hall, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Though the Dew Drop has closed its doors, the bayou’s best bands still rock out at Ruby’s in its original, 100-year-old building.
