Brand New Hilton Garden Inn next to Two Historical Cities

The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, made up of two parallel bridges, was inaugurated in 1956; at that time, it was the world’s longest bridge to exist above water. They grew into little cultural centers of their own, gaining some of the food, people, and music that make New Orleans the cultural capital of the American South.
New Orleans’s first jazz acts didn’t have the luxury of driving across the causeway. Instead, musicians including Bunk Johnson, Buddy Petit, and Papa Celestin would take ferries across the lake to Mandeville to play in rambunctious clubs such as Ruby’s Roadhouse and the Dew Drop Jazz and Social Hall, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Though the Dew Drop has closed its doors, the bayou’s best bands still rock out at Ruby’s in its original, 100-year-old building.
