Modern Hotel Steps from Old Quebec and the Grande Allée
The Hôtel Château Laurier Québec sits just outside the historic walled neighborhood of Old Quebec, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its 17th-century colonial architecture, cobbled streets, and neoclassical Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica. But outside of the wall, on the celebrated Grande Allée, you’re more likely to stumble upon a high-end restaurant or bar than gothic ruins. The hotel also overlooks the sprawling Plains of Abraham, a Central Park–style urban playground that hosts festivals and outdoor concerts.
Locally made furniture and vaulted ceilings made from rare woods lend a chic, earthy style to superior and de luxe guest rooms. Superior rooms have views of the Plains of Abraham or the inner courtyard, and de luxe rooms are more spacious and include gas fireplaces.
A central courtyard called the Four Seasons Garden houses two jacuzzis that stay open year-round. Indoors, you’ll find a heated saltwater pool, as well as the Bioterra Urban Health Spa, which features a mani-pedi station.
Quebec City: Centuries-Old City Hosts Winter Carnival
Founded in 1608, Quebec City ranks among the oldest cities in North America; the ramparts that enclose Old Quebec are the only city walls on the continent north of Mexico that are still standing. The vast majority of Quebec City residents are native French speakers, though more than a third can speak English.
Each winter, Quebec City hosts the Winter Carnival (to be held February 1–17 in 2013). For the two weeks leading up to Mardi Gras, the population of the city explodes, with out-of-towners flocking in for the day and night parades, skiing, snow rafting, ice sculptures, and outdoor shows. Groupon buyers who wish to stay at the hotel during the weekend of February 1 or 2 are required to pay an addition $50-per-night premium.
