Sprawling Family-Friendly Plantation-Style Resort by the Sea

The Ocean Creek Resort spans 57 acres; it’s the only resort in Myrtle Beach to stretch from Highway 17 all the way down to the ocean. And there’s plenty to do in that wide-open space: at the family-friendly resort, you can play tennis and beach volleyball and bike along the many shaded paths. Head near the water and you can explore the wildlife in the ocean creek that runs between the main tower and the resort’s Beach Club Bar and Grill. Turtles, families of ducks, seabirds and small fish commune in and around the salty stream; you might even see a crab or two.

Moss-draped oaks and large stretches of open space surround the resort buildings, including the lodge villa one- or two-bedrooms. With a full kitchen, a screened-in porch, two TVs, and private bedrooms, each room is a good fit for a family. Should you choose not to do your own cooking, you can start the day with breakfast at the Four Seasons Restaurant, located just a few steps from the lodge villas. A hot breakfast buffet is served each morning in the sunlit dining room.

An indoor pool, whirlpool tubs, and tennis courts anchor the resort. With eight courts—two of which are clay, the rest hard-court—there’s hardly ever a wait for a game.

At Barefoot Landing, right across the street, there’s a House of Blues, the Alabama Theatre, and shops and restaurants. It’s also just a short drive to the Tanger outlets and the shows and nightlife of Myrtle Beach.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina: Sandy Beaches, Seaside Golf Courses, and Classic Amusement-Park Rides

Myrtle Beach is the crown jewel of South Carolina's Grand Strand, a 60-mile stretch of white, sandy beaches along the Atlantic seaboard that draws surfers, fishers, and kayakers. The city was named one of the best vacation spots in the United States for a family by USA Today, in part because of its wooden boardwalk, which stretches for more than a mile and buzzes with carnival games and amusement-park rides. Hop into the SkyWheel Ferris wheel’s glass-floored gondolas, surrounded by more than a million LED lights, for a panoramic view of the city below.

Less than 20 miles south of Myrtle Beach, the tiny fishing village of Murrells Inlet provides a tranquil contrast to the boardwalk's hustle and bustle. At Brookgreen Gardens, more than 1,400 original sculptures stand amid sprawling floral gardens and massive, moss-covered oak trees that have been around for centuries. Murrells Inlet is also home to the Tom Fazio–designed TPC Myrtle Beach golf course, 1 of more than 100 courses in the area that helped Myrtle Beach earn its title as the seaside golf capital of the world.
