Pacific Northwest Lodge with Golf Course and Award-Winning Restaurant

Skamania Lodge takes its name from a Chinook word meaning “swift water.” The borrowed moniker is appropriate, considering the hotel overlooks the Columbia River Gorge. There's a high concentration of waterfalls around this gorge, including the fifth-highest waterfall in the country. The lodge is situated on 175 wooded acres and surrounded by beautiful natural attractions, and it serves as both a peaceful place to find solitude and a fine home base for hiking or fishing trips. It also is surrounded by history, situated near the Lewis and Clark Trail and just 60 miles from Mount St. Helens.

Montana slate, local rock, and natural and reclaimed timber feature prominently in the lodge's architecture. Inside, you can find original artwork and petroglyph rubbings that depict local Native American history and the flannel styles of lumberjacks throughout the years. Guest rooms overlook the Columbia River, but arguably the best viewpoints of the river scenery are located at the hotel's golf course. Tucked within the evergreen woods, the 18-hole course is surrounded by snow-capped cliffs and sparkling water.

You can enjoy regional cuisine such as grilled steelhead at Skamania's award-winning Cascade Dining Room. Meanwhile, the restaurant River Rock serves lighter dishes; feel free to dine on a waterfront patio or by the eatery's towering rock fireplace. Nearby, the hotel's Waterleaf Spa offers soothing treatments including a purifying facial and a body rock massage.

Stevenson, Washington: Laid-Back Riverfront Town amid Massive Forest Preserve and Scenic Trails

A small, scenic town on the Columbia River Gorge, Stevenson was once a humble logging community, but has since evolved into a renowned year-round destination. Many of the visitors are drawn to Gifford Pinchot National Forest, just 2 miles from the hotel. It's an outdoor wonderland, spread across 1.3 millions acres, where you can go hiking, whitewater rafting, or fish for salmon and steelhead below Bonneville Dam. It's possible to get beautiful views of the whole wilderness terrain by hiking up the Pacific Crest Trail, which skirts the Big Lava Bed, a 20-square-mile volcanic formation.

The Columbia River Gorge is sprawled amid the Cascade Range Volcanoes, including Mount Hood, which is located about an hour away. It's Oregon's tallest peak, and it has an excellent hiking-trail network spread amid five wilderness areas.
