Peaceful Retreat on the Banks of the Pagan River

Blue herons, white egrets, and even the occasional bald eagle soar within eyeshot of the Smithfield Station's rustic wraparound porch. That’s partially because this boutique hotel is located right on the waterfront of the Pagan River, a common hangout spot for these big birds.

Smithfield Station, named after one of the old Coast Guard stations that once dotted Virginia’s outer banks, is decorated with nautical decor: in the lobby, there’s a compass rose on blond-wood floors. You can take a stroll on a waterfront boardwalk nearby. Feel free to ask the boutique hotel’s owners, the Pack family, for tips on what local restaurants and attractions to check out.

From the private balcony of a deluxe lodge room, you can take in stunning views of the Pagan River. The room has an electric fireplace, and select rooms have been outfitted with oversize jacuzzi tubs. Custom cherry furniture and plush chairs lend a homey ambiance.

Winner of a Readers’ Choice Award from Hampton Roads magazine, The Restaurant at Smithfield Station serves fresh local seafood and world-famous Smithfield ham seven days a week. Other offerings include sweet-potato-encrusted rockfish stuffed with ham and crabmeat. Meals can be devoured in the cedar-paneled dining room or on a deck overlooking the marina and grassy marshes. With all that Smithfield has to offer, today's Groupon makes a thoughtful gift idea.

Smithfield, Virginia: Ham Capital of the World on Historic Riverfront

Located west of Hampton Roads, Smithfield has been called the Ham Capital of the World for its Smithfield ham, a country ham cured with dry salt and aged for a minimum of six months. It’s been a staple of the town for centuries, and you can try it at the several markets and restaurants that lie within walking distance of Smithfield Station. In 2012, America in Bloom—a non-profit organization that promotes nationwide beautification—awarded the town first place in its population category and also awarded Smithfield the "Best Historic Walking Tour."

Just across the street from the hotel is Windsor Castle Park, a former plantation complex. It features a preserved mid-17th-century manor house as well as two 19th-century granaries amid more than 4 miles of woodland walking trails and several prime picnicking spots.

Smithfield is also home to a church built in 1632 and the homes of many patriots who fought for American independence. Take a 45-minute drive to transport back in time to Colonial Williamsburg, or visit Busch Gardens to look into the future, where people travel only by roller coaster.
