Mimoco

The stern, masked face of Batman. The bright red bow of Hello Kitty. The green, wizened visage of Yoda. These images have two things in common: they've all become iconic, and they've all been wrapped around a 64-gigabyte stick of flash memory.

Boston-based design studio Mimoco (pronounced mee-mo-ko) adds a jolt of pop culture and style to familiar technologies and gadgets, most notably with Mimobot, the company's flagship line of flash drives. Familiar faces from DC Comics, Hello Kitty, Star Wars, and Emily the Strange, along with such notable figures as Einstein and Bruce Lee, grace the glossy exteriors of 2–64-gigabyte memory sticks. Each comes preloaded with desktop wallpaper and other character-specific content—which the company calls Mimory—allowing one to match computers to flash drives, flash drives to T-shirts, and T-shirts to secret double lives as caped crusaders.

In addition to the pack of famous and fictional faces, Mimoco partners with independent popartists to create one-of-a-kind consumer electronics and home goods. To engage with its creative fan base, the company hosts design challenges.

The Groupon Guide to: Local Commercials

No matter the business, these premises for local commercials are sure to get customers lining up to your door—assuming they watch a lot of daytime and late-night television. Try any of the following ideas:

  • A man in a gorilla costume jumps up and down on a used car for being too expensive.
  • A frighteningly incomplete computer-animated leprechaun says your store’s mattresses “are no SHAM—they ROCK!”
  • A black-and-white close-up of an old woman looking frightened. When the old woman uses your product or service, the picture returns to color as normal.
  • All text! Can’t go wrong with text!
  • Retired minor-league baseball pitcher Carey Mazzuchellio throws a baseball … right at the camera? No, not really, but it sure looks like it once the graphics come together.

How can a local commercial transform your local business?
