Boutique Hotel Steps from Caribbean Sea and Fifth Avenue

You won't see a car driving down Playa del Carmen's main thoroughfare, Quinta Avenida, or Fifth Avenue; cars are off-limits here. Instead of traffic horns and revving engines, the cobblestone street is flooded with pedestrians, live marimba musicians, firebreathers, and vendors hawking handmade goods and Cuban cigars. Less than a block from this cultural hub, Acanto Boutique Hotel is well-positioned whether you want to explore Playa del Carmen's Mayan architecture, check out its hip nightlife, or kick back on the Caribbean beaches that lie just steps away.

Tropical trees shade the hotel, which resembles a hacienda with its wrought-iron terraces, arched windows, and adobe façade. Down in the courtyard, palm trees and stone siding are arranged around the swimming pool. Head up to a rooftop jacuzzi to find views of the ocean.

If you want to pick up the pace, the concierge can set you up on various eco-tours that allow you to scuba-dive along Playa's massive barrier reef and teach dolphins how to whistle Creedence Clearwater Revival songs through their blowholes. Playa del Carmen lies on the southeastern tip of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula on the exotic Riviera Maya, bordered by the Caribbean Sea. No cars are permitted on the city's vibrant main tourist strip; it's comfortable to walk up and down to take in the sights.

Also less than an hour away is the ancient city of Tulum, which offers a glimpse of early Mayan life with columned temples, castles, and towers.
