My wife and I celebrated our 15th anniversary in Thailand with Affordable World. We did the 10 day trip. We had the time of our lives!! I was wary at first since I haven't done a tour like this but by the end of the trip I told my wife I wouldn't wanna travel to a foreign country trip without booking with Affordable World. Our guides were the most awesome people and knew Thailand very well since they were both locals who grew up in Thailand. Sharky and Kitty are the guides everyone should request. Especially Sharky. He cared so much about everyone in the group. We had a lot of people in our group but he gave each and every person an individualized experience to make sure they were having a good time. There was a lot of work that went into our tour. I'm not sure how these guys made money on us cuz we got it for cheap and we got to stay in the nicest hotels. One of our hotels was right on the beach!! They included SOOOOO much with the tour. I thought the only way we'd have a good time is if we added tours and paid our own way on a lot of stuff. I was dead wrong. They included breakfast every single day and lunch on a few of the days. We ate like royalty!! They also included some amazing tours and great advice on what to do outside the tour. A lot of the things you can do in Thailand are super cheap or no cost at all. I highly highly recommend this trip with Affordable World. Especially if you can get Sharky as your tour guide.

In between, you’ll take a cruise on the Yangtze River, sailing past jagged gorges and distinctive rock formations. Introductory tours and optional side trips can acquaint you with each city, and there’s some leisure time to explore each stop on your own. This getaway includes:

  • Round-trip airfare from Los Angeles (LAX), Houston (IAH), San Francisco (SFO), or New York (JFK)
  • China domestic airfares: Beijing-Yichang, Chongqing-Shanghai
  • Standard accommodations at 4-star hotels
  • 4-Day Yangtze River Cruise on the Victoria Selina
  • Daily breakfast at the hotel, daily 3 meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) on the cruise

See the full itinerary and optional tours here.

Days 1–4: Beijing

Your trip begins in the bustling capital of Beijing, where you’ll have a day of leisure before taking the city tour on Day 4. The tour takes you to historic Qianmen Street and its iconic Zhengyangmen Gate, as well sites built for the 2008 Olympic games.

  • Tiananmen Square: The city tour also takes you to this massive city square, where you’ll view Chairman Mao’s remains and see the Monument to the People’s Heroes, a stone obelisk built in 1952 to honor Chinese soldiers.
  • Optional tours: On Day 3, head north to the Great Wall of China, which snakes through more than 5,000 miles of meadows, mountains, and deserts ($49 per person). Or head deep into the world’s biggest palace complex, the Forbidden City, which was once off-limits to those that weren’t royalty ($28 per person)
  • Accommodations: 4-star Doubletree Hilton Beijing

Days 5–8: Yangtze River Cruise

After a brief flight to Yichang, you’ll cruise down the mighty Yangtze River, Asia’s longest river. The river flows past some of the world’s most remarkable rock formations, including the rugged Three Gorges and the Lesser Three Gorges. The ship will make pit stops along the way to explore such sites as the hillside village of Wushan before gliding through Wu Gorge, where mist-veiled mountains seem to take on eerie shapes.

  • Optional excursions: Purchase the Victoria Cruises Shore Excursion Package ($70 per person) for guided tours of the Lesser Three Gorges, the massive Three Gorges Dam, and one of the following: the wooden Shibaozhai pagoda, the Fengdu Ghost City, or the city of Wanzhou.

Days 9–12: Shanghai

Your final stop is Shanghai, where the Huangpu River separates Pudong’s futuristic skyscrapers from the Romanesque and Gothic architecture in the riverside Bund district.

  • Shanghai Museum might resemble a large cooking pot, but inside, it houses hundreds of bronze and ceramic art pieces from the Qing and Ming dynasties.
  • City God Temple, which dates back to the 15th century, features ornate pavilions and teahouses. Outside, vendors hawk incense, jewelry, and candy.
  • Optional tours: Head to nearby Suzhou, where canals wind past century-old pagodas surrounded by fragrant gardens ($62 per person), take a Huangpu River cruise next to some of the world’s tallest buildings ($25), or enjoy dinner while watching an acrobatics show ($40).
  • Accommodations: 4.5-star Renaissance Shanghai Yangtze Hotel

Wonderful bargain and perfect trip! We barely lifted a finger our entire trip - all transportation was classy and punctual. Tour guides were excellent. Accommodations were small but safe and clean, breakfasts were delicious. Communication with Affordable World was very good before and during our trip. Excellent for couples but due to the schedule may be difficult to manage with kids.
