Days 1–4: Beijing
Your trip begins in the bustling capital of Beijing, where you’ll have a day of leisure before taking the city tour on Day 4. The tour takes you to historic Qianmen Street and its iconic Zhengyangmen Gate, as well sites built for the 2008 Olympic games.
- Tiananmen Square: The city tour also takes you to this massive city square, where you’ll view Chairman Mao’s remains and see the Monument to the People’s Heroes, a stone obelisk built in 1952 to honor Chinese soldiers.
- Optional tours: On Day 3, head north to the Great Wall of China, which snakes through more than 5,000 miles of meadows, mountains, and deserts ($49 per person). Or head deep into the world’s biggest palace complex, the Forbidden City, which was once off-limits to those that weren’t royalty ($28 per person)
- Accommodations: 4-star Doubletree Hilton Beijing
Days 5–8: Yangtze River Cruise
After a brief flight to Yichang, you’ll cruise down the mighty Yangtze River, Asia’s longest river. The river flows past some of the world’s most remarkable rock formations, including the rugged Three Gorges and the Lesser Three Gorges. The ship will make pit stops along the way to explore such sites as the hillside village of Wushan before gliding through Wu Gorge, where mist-veiled mountains seem to take on eerie shapes.
- Optional excursions: Purchase the Victoria Cruises Shore Excursion Package ($70 per person) for guided tours of the Lesser Three Gorges, the massive Three Gorges Dam, and one of the following: the wooden Shibaozhai pagoda, the Fengdu Ghost City, or the city of Wanzhou.
Days 9–12: Shanghai
Your final stop is Shanghai, where the Huangpu River separates Pudong’s futuristic skyscrapers from the Romanesque and Gothic architecture in the riverside Bund district.
- Shanghai Museum might resemble a large cooking pot, but inside, it houses hundreds of bronze and ceramic art pieces from the Qing and Ming dynasties.
- City God Temple, which dates back to the 15th century, features ornate pavilions and teahouses. Outside, vendors hawk incense, jewelry, and candy.
- Optional tours: Head to nearby Suzhou, where canals wind past century-old pagodas surrounded by fragrant gardens ($62 per person), take a Huangpu River cruise next to some of the world’s tallest buildings ($25), or enjoy dinner while watching an acrobatics show ($40).
- Accommodations: 4.5-star Renaissance Shanghai Yangtze Hotel
