Hotel at a Glance: Appeldoorn’s Sunset Bay Resort
Once the sun has set behind the soft, sandy banks of Mille Lacs Lake, the sky above it erupts with thousands of bright, twinkling stars. Appeldoorn’s Sunset Bay Resort sits right on the lake. You can do more than just stargaze, though. Go fishing all year round—the lake offers some of the best walleye fishing in the state.
- Renovated cabins offer all the comforts of home, including fully equipped kitchens, fireplaces, and WiFi. Each is also outfitted in a simple, rustic decor. Some also feature decks or a beachside location, and others still can connect to fit all your friends and loved ones.
- Hang out in the courtyard, where you can build a campfire, cook out on the grills, or feel the wind on your face while lounging on the bench swing.
- Bring your own boat: The resort offers its own dock and valet boat launch to help you navigate the shallow waters; both are complimentary.
- Test your luck at the Grand Casino Mille Lacs, about a 30-minute drive away on the lake’s west bank.
- Go for a hike at Father Hennepin State Park, where the trails wind through hardwood forests, marshes, and the lake’s rocky shores; about 10 miles away.
Isle, Minnesota: Tiny Town on Mille Lacs Lake
Isle, Minnesota is a paradise for fishing. The small town—just under 2.5 square miles—is set on the banks of Mille Lacs Lake, Minnesota’s second-largest lake and one of the best spots for walleye fishing in the state. Its placid waters are also home to northern pike, jumbo perch, and small- and largemouth bass.
If fishing isn’t your thing, the lake’s great for swimming, boating, and kayaking as well. Or you can hike or bike through the quiet countryside on the 10-mile Soo Line Recreation Trail. During colder months, snowmobiling and ice fishing are popular, and tiny ice-fishing houses are a common sight on the lake. Just outside of Isle is the Father Hennepin State Park, where you can camp or hike the hardwood forest, marshlands, and craggy shore.
Both Isle and the park are located on the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe Reservation. Sculptures, jewelry, music, and locally harvested maple syrup—all made by Mille Lacs artisans—are available for sale at a restored 1930s trading post, about 15 miles away. This culturally significant site is also home to the Grand Casino Mille Lacs and the Mille Lacs Indian Museum, where you can learn about the Ojibwe through collections of traditional tools, clothing, and other artifacts.
