Fiji’s Coral Coast
The remote volcanic islands of Fiji are clustered 1,100 nautical miles northeast of New Zealand on a bright-blue patch of the South Pacific Ocean. Fiji’s Coral Coast is a premier scuba-diving and snorkeling destination, with offshore reefs supporting a brightly colored ecosystem of fish and marine animals. Learn about the day-to-day lifestyle of Fijians on a day trip to the nearby village of Tagaqe, or learn to prepare authentic local cuisine during a cooking class.
Bungalows Just Steps from the Beach
Located on the island of Nadi, Fiji Hideaway Resort & Spa is sprawled out along the coast just 90 minutes from the Nadi airport. The resort’s focal point: a nearly 2,000-foot-long private white-sand beach. You’ll be staying just steps from the beach in an ocean-view bure, a modernized version of the classic Fijian thatched-roof bungalow. Bures have air conditioning and en suite bathrooms.
Chefs prepare local and traditional cuisine at the resort’s main restaurant; that includes a complimentary full breakfast buffet each morning. Coco Bar features a daily happy hour and a wide selection of wines.
Beach Volleyball, Scuba-Diving School, and Dance Performances
Some of the Hideaway resort’s staff members began playing rugby together in 2011; since then, they’ve notched various bowl victories as the Hideaway Hurricanes. It’s a testament to the loose, playful atmosphere here; during your stay, you’re encouraged to try snorkeling, surfing, and beach volleyball, or to go on a village tour. There’s even a PADI-certified dive center where you can get professional scuba-diving training.
There’s also nightly entertainment; that might include a full Polynesian dance show or a traditional Kava ceremony. Each Thursday, local villages perform a mesmerizing fire-walking show. Visit the resort’s website to learn more about its facilities, its activities and tours, and the onsite spa.
