Old-World Charm Meets Contemporary Elegance at Boutique Hotel Facing Niagara River

The newly built Federal-style Barton Hill Hotel & Spa pays homage to the past while embracing contemporary comforts. Standing on land that once served as the staging grounds for the first battle of the War of 1812, the hotel now provides peaceful respite for vacationers discovering the idyllic vineyards and charming villages of the Niagara region A full-service spa and modern amenities compliment the historic atmosphere of the Lewiston area and the neoclassical hotel.

Beyond the white stone entrance, you'll find a great room anchored by stately columns and appointed with Greek Revival furniture. Upstairs, spacious Portage Retreat rooms carry on the sense of grandeur, with varying décor that might include four-poster beds, heavy draperies, and wrought-iron chairs. All come with a gas fireplace and an iPod docking station from which to play Riverdance show tunes.

The Chantry Restaurant serves inventive cocktails alongside gourmet pub fare. The menu rotates weekly, and might include Cajun shrimp alfredo ($19) and homestyle beef stew served over mashed potatoes ($18). Breakfast typically includes eggs benedict or an egg frittata.

Lewiston, New York: Historic Town Minutes from Niagara Falls

Lewiston was one of western New York's earliest settlements, dating back to the 1600s. Today, its quaint streets are lined with antique stores and art galleries. Just a 10-minute drive from the hotel, a handful of wineries makes up the Niagara Wine Trail, best known for its ice wine, a sweet dessert varietal made from frozen grapes.

The Niagara River flows past the hotel, about 8 miles upstream from the American side of the falls. Roughly 600,000 gallons of water cascade over the brink each second and create a thunderous roar while sending a cool mist into the air. Niagara Falls State Park offers a variety of lookout points, but one of the best is free: the Prospect Point Park observation tower soars 282 feet skyward for panoramic views of the falls.
