New Boutique Hotel in the Heart of South Lake Tahoe

At 6,266 feet above sea level, Basecamp Hotel’s rooftop hot tub offers a lot more than relaxation—it’s also the spot to take in sensational views of Mount Tallac. Located in South Lake Tahoe, Basecamp Hotel is a newly built boutique hotel with a vintage mountain lodge theme, complete with reclaimed barn wood in the lobby and old-fashioned mining lamps hanging from the ceiling. Off the lobby, a bar serves hot chocolate and locally brewed beers to those coming in from the slopes, and there’s plenty of storage space for skis and boards. And as the hotel’s website says, Basecamp Hotel is “built for exploring Lake Tahoe,” as it’s located a five-minute walk from the lake, four minutes from the Heavenly Ski Resort and its famous scenic gondola ride, and a short ride from the gorgeous Emerald Bay State Park.

Each room at Basecamp is spacious and stylish, with grey wool and flannel textures accented by bright-orange chairs. Whimsical artwork by Wendy MacNaughton hangs on the walls, and each room has a gear rack for drying skiing equipment. On Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights, Basecamp hosts a communal dinner (for an additional fee), where you can swap stories with other outdoors enthusiasts. Every morning, head downstairs for a complimentary continental breakfast before hitting the nature trails and skiing runs around South Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe, California: Year-Round Haven for Outdoor Adventures and Late-Night Revelry

Lake Tahoe has no real off-season; people find ways to make use of its pristine water, beaches, and mountains all year long. In the summer, the lake's clear, freshwater surface—which straddles the California-Nevada border—is dotted with swimmers, boaters, and jet skiers. Several ski resorts with world-class slopes typically stay open from November to April, and Emerald Bay State Park is accessible year-round. A moderately easy hike to the base of Lower Eagle Falls reveals breathtaking views of the waterfalls crashing down from above.

A diverse crowd of spectators gathers at night for South Lake Tahoe's various events, which range from wine and food festivals to rock concerts and fireworks displays. A few miles northwest of South Lake Tahoe sits Stateline, Nevada, where a handful of casinos host high-stakes games of blackjack and solitaire.
