Wilderness Retreat in the Foothills of the Canadian Rockies

Beaverfoot Lodge is off the beaten path, and quite literally so: you have to travel on a 8-mile (13 km) unpaved road to get there, and around mile 4 (6.5 km) you’ll see a lodge signpost that reads, "Don't give up yet!" The trip is worthwhile—once you get there, you can get astounding views of the surrounding meadowlands and the snow-capped peaks in Yoho National Park, which tower up over a 2-acre lake.

There’s also a sense of pioneer-like independence here. The lodge and cabins run on electricity generated by a nearby stream, and you can choose to stay in the covered wagons overnight, which feature two twin beds and just a canvas cover overhead. You’re also encouraged to rough it in the wilderness—you can access waterfalls nearby either by foot or horseback. One- or two-hour trail rides (extra fee) lead riders through the mountains where you'll see an old trapper cabin, a beaver dam, and the paw-prints of wolves and black bears.

Though the property has a back-to-basics mentality, it doesn't skimp on the finer things. There are two wood-burning saunas on the property, one of which has a natural plunge pool fed by a glacier. Healthy meals are served throughout the day. The lodge rooms, ideal for couples, are made from hand-hewn wood and have down duvets on all the beds. The Rustic and executive cabins have more privacy and extra bedrooms and are set apart from the main lodge. The covered wagons are situated near washrooms, hot showers, and a covered eating area.

Golden, British Columbia: Mountain Wilderness Bordered by Stunning National Parks

Bordering Beaverfoot Lodge to the north is Yoho National Park; Yoho is a Cree word that expresses wonder and awe, and understandably so—the park has 28 mountain peaks that are more than 9,800 feet (3,000 m) high amid thunderous rivers and quiet forests. More than 400 miles of hiking trails wind through the park, and it's not uncommon to see wildlife such as mountain goats, elk, moose, and coyotes here.

The area is also a destination for mountain biking. For years, Golden hosted Psychosis, the longest single-track downhill mountain-bike race.
