Houston: Space History, Museums, and World-Class Dining in Nation’s Fourth-Largest City

As the nation’s fourth-largest city by population, Houston has established itself as one of the Gulf Coast’s most thriving cultural hubs. The city has 19 museums covering everything from history to art to science. For art lovers, the Menil Collection—which Frommer’s calls “one of the world’s great private collections”—is a must-see. Here, you’ll browse a wide array of 20th-century art from Jasper Johns, René Magritte, and Andy Warhol, as well as artifacts from Africa and the Pacific Islands.

You could also spend an entire day exploring Houston’s science institutions. When Apollo 13 astronaut Jim Lovell famously stated, “Houston, we have a problem,” he was talking to mission control at Space Center Houston. Here, visitors can tour the historic mission-control room and get a behind-the-scenes look at astronauts training for the International Space Station. Along Houston’s Hermann Park, The Health Museum exhibits a large-scale human body that you can enter to learn about how your organs operate.

For shopping, visit Uptown Park, an outdoor mall that brings to mind an Italian piazza through Romanesque columns, stone fountains, and open-air bistros with strings of twinkling lights. According to a Zagat survey, Houstonians dine out more than anyone else in the country, and this mall offers some of the city’s best eats, from sushi to Spanish tapas to creamy cupcakes.

I purchased this groupon and made reservations to stay at this location thinking that it would be like other Comfort Suites where I have stayed. I have stayed at various Comfort Suites during business and personal trips. The reason I like to stay and all of my previous experience has been availability of a room with a king size bed and sleeper sofa. According to the description when booking my reservation and the information I received that type of room is what I would have during my stay. This was very misleading and I was angry/disappointed to find that ther was no sleeper sofa in my room. There was a sofa, but no pull out sleeper as in all of the other Comfort Suites I had stayed at before. I was also told that there were no alternative rooms available that would provide the needed sleeping arrangements, there were no roll away beds available. Staff was not helpful and offered no compensation of any kind. Because I used groupons to pay for this 4 night stay I did receive a discounted rate although it was not nearly enough to make the inconvience worth it. I ended up having to purchase a air mattress to accommodate my party with appropriate sleeping arrangements, which was embarrassing, not to mention the discomfort. The whole time I felt disgruntled and tricked, intentionally mislead that I had purchased this room at a discount rate thinking I would get what would typically be expected and what I have previously recieved at Comfort Suites. Never never ever again!
