California Rancho-Style Resort with Lush Gardens
In the 1940s, Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa was a Spanish-colonial-style estate whose guest list consisted, mostly, of thoroughbred horses. Back then, the estate was first and foremost a horse training ground. Today, it's a sprawling resort, and there are hints of the site's history throughout the property, including original stable doors and beds draped with equestrian blankets.
Clay-tile roofs, wrought-iron fixtures, and a whitewashed façade give Estancia La Jolla the feel of an old hacienda. The resort's lush, manicured grounds are dappled with native plants including palms, succulents, and vibrant flowers. The full-service spa has an outdoor relaxation area and treatment spaces in addition to indoor facilities, which offers guests a garden setting throughout their experiences.
Come evening, guests can enjoy a relaxing dinner or weekday happy hour on the patio area of the hotel’s lounge, Mustangs & Burros. It specializes in seasonal cuisine often inspired by the Southwest and inventive cocktails, which are served in the glow of an outdoor fireplace. The onsite Trinitas Cellars Wine Bar offers California reds and whites paired with signature fare such as stuffed baked artichoke. There's also a sophisticated atmosphere at Adobe El Restaurante, which has sleek wooden tables and a golden-lit dining room. Sample seasonal flavors at the restaurant, which is open daily for breakfast and lunch.
La Jolla, California: Upscale Coastal Community Conveniently Close to San Diego Attractions
La Jolla sits on the northern outskirts of San Diego, on a stretch of hilly coastal terrain marked by sprawling mansions and dramatic cliffs overlooking the Pacific. Boutiques, galleries, and upscale restaurants mingle in the Village, La Jolla’s downtown business district, but Mother Nature takes center stage throughout most of the area.
Many people hop in kayaks to see the 6,000 acres of rocky reefs at the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park. You can explore sea caves and get a glimpse of marine life, including sea lions and orange garibaldi. The park’s La Jolla Cove draws in divers and snorkelers, who plunge into the calm, clear waters to get up close to the living coral. After a dive, it's nice to kick back and soak in the sun on the white-sand beachfront.
